Nothing beats homemade lemonade on a hot summer day! It’s also a classic beverage that’s fantastic for parties, casual get-togethers, or beach outings.
The great part is that you can make this recipe a day in advance and store it in the fridge.
Moreover, the chances are, if you’re going to make lemonade, the rest of the family will probably want some, too, so why not make a gallon?
Although it’s pretty easy to make lemonade with synthetic store-bought products, I enjoy the tanginess and unquestionable health benefits that come with using fresh lemons.
If you love lemonade, this one’s for you! To help you make foolproof homemade lemonade that’s perfect every time, I have provided my sought-after 1-gallon lemonade recipe for you to enjoy!

Suppose you’re looking for a traditional, refreshing homemade lemonade recipe that is simple to follow.
In that case, you have come to the right place. Here are more reasons to use my lemonade recipe:
- It’s really easy to make and takes just a few minutes
- You’ll have enough fresh homemade lemonade to feed an army
- It’s fantastic for parties and gatherings
- You can find the ingredients in your kitchen
- It’s an old-fashioned recipe, so your lemonade will have fresh lemon juice
- You make several variations, including a sugar-free option or add flavors to create fan favorites such as the Starbucks mango dragonfruit lemonade
- Substitute the real lemons and sugar or use hot water in place of cold water to make lemonade much faster
- Enjoy the many health benefits of lemons without the sour taste
With this in mind, let’s get started with the homemade lemonade recipe!

Storing Your Homemade Lemonade
The great thing about using this fresh lemonade recipe is that you can store the beverage in the fridge for up to five days! Make it in advance before a party and simply pour and serve on the day!
Can I Use Store-bought Lemon Juice Instead of Fresh Lemon Juice?
Absolutely! If you’re in a hurry and need to make lemonade quickly, substitute the fresh lemons with three cups of lemon juice and follow the rest of the recipe. Keep in mind that you can also save time by using sugar syrup. However, this recipe doesn’t take very long to make!

How Many Lemons Will I Need for Half a Gallon of Lemonade?
If you’re wondering whether this recipe can be halved, the answer is yes! Instead of 10 large lemons or 16 smaller ones, you will need five large or eight small lemons. The rest of the ingredients can be halved as well.
Is Lemonade Healthy?
Perhaps one of the best reasons to make lemonade is its health benefits. It’s especially helpful if you’re trying to get your kids to consume lemons since this makes it much more palatable. Although this homemade lemonade recipe does call for sugar, you can simply substitute it for a sugar-free sweetener to enjoy a guilt-free drink.
The Benefits of Drinking Lemonade
It’s important to remember that the benefits of this beverage come from the fresh lemon juice used in the recipe. If you opt for store-bought lemon juice, you might not receive as many health benefits. Here are some of the ways lemonade can benefit your body:
- It supports good immune health
- Promotes hydration
- Lemon juice provides weight loss benefits
- This beverage can offer a healthy dose of vitamin C
- It can help with digestion
Overall, lemonade is a much better alternative than other popular summer beverages, such as fizzy drinks, that contain excessive amounts of sugar and other added chemicals.

Lemonade Variations to Try
Suppose you have been making fresh lemonade for your family for a while now. In that case, you might be looking for a few ways to change it up for a refreshing new taste. Here are some of the variations I often use to kick up my homemade lemonade a notch:
Strawberry Lemonade Recipe
To make this exciting variation, you can add strawberry syrup to the mix or slice a few strawberries, add them to the lemonade, and allow the flavors to mix before serving. Not only is this extremely tasty, but it also turns pink, which can make it the perfect option for a little girl’s party or something more visually appealing.
Add a Twist with Basil
Another great way to create an interesting new flavor is by adding fresh basil to the homemade lemonade and allowing it to sit for a while. It might sound strange, but it is definitely worth a try if you’re feeling adventurous!
Kiwi Mint Lemonade
This is another delicious and healthy take on traditional homemade lemonade. Add kiwi and mint leaves to your lemonade and allow it to sit in the fridge. The addition of fresh mint and kiwi slices also adds a decorative touch and a delicious something that your guests and much on after downing a glass of tangy lemonade.
Fruity Concoction
Do you have a bit of a sweet tooth? Don’t turn to candies! Simply add chopped-up fruit to your lemonade for a sweet, colorful alternative to the traditional lemonade recipe. Some fruit to try are:
- Watermelon
- Mango
- Berries
- Peach
The sky’s the limit when it comes to personalizing your drink, so you can go as crazy as you want!
Sugar-free Lemonade
If you have diabetes or are watching your calories, the good news is that you can still enjoy the pleasure of a cold glass of lemonade.
Instead of sugar, you can add sweeteners, such as erythritol or stevia. However, if your goal is to lower your sugar intake, you can achieve this by adding a product like Monk fruit sweetener for a great-tasting, low-calorie alternative.

Creating the best lemonade takes just a few minutes! You can quench your thirst with a delicious glass of fresh lemonade on a hot day while enjoying a number of health benefits!
My recipe is very easy to follow, and it yields a gallon of lemonade, which is great for parties and other gatherings.

1 Gallon Lemonade

To help you make foolproof homemade lemonade that's perfect every time, I have provided my sought-after 1-gallon lemonade recipe for you to enjoy!
Ingredients
- 10 large lemons or 16 small ones
- 16 c. of water
- 3.5 c. granulated sugar
Instructions
- To make the syrup, combine the sugar with two cups of water in a saucepan. Let it come to a boil before removing it from the stovetop.
- Allow the syrup to cool for a few minutes before popping it into the refrigerator to cool completely.
- While you wait for the syrup to cool, squeeze your lemons until you have about three cups of fresh lemon juice.
- Once your fresh lemon juice has been prepared, and your syrup has cooled, you can combine these elements, along with the remaining 14 cups of water, and stir well. Store it in the refrigerator or serve your delicious freshly squeezed lemonade immediately
- When it's time to serve the homemade lemonade, I add ice and one or two fresh lemon slices, and a bit of lemon zest for decoration.
Notes
- It's important not to leave your saucepan on the heat and forget about it. Our goal is not to create caramel, but syrup, so keep an eye on it and take it off the heat once it has come to a boil.
- Be sure to remove any seeds before using the lemon juice! I often save a few lemon slices and lemon zest to add to the drink before serving for that classic "lemonade" look.
