The Best Secret Sauce Recipe for Patty Melts: Ingredients and Step-by-Step How-To Guide

All-in-all, it takes around half an hour from start to finish.

How to Make a Patty Melt

Prep time: Five Minutes

Cook time: 10-15 Minutes

Yield: Three patty melts

Ingredients

One pound of ground beef

Six tablespoons of unsalted butter (softened)

Half a teaspoon of onion powder

Half a teaspoon of garlic powder

Salt and pepper (a pinch of each or to taste)

Six slices of bread (I use rye bread, but sourdough bread is also good)

Six slices of cheese (I use cheddar cheese, but you can also use Swiss cheese)

Relish in dish

Method

Step One: Put the Ground Beef in a Mixing Bowl and Add the Onion Powder, Garlic powder, and Salt

Mix your seasoning through the ground beef in a mixing bowl.

Some people prefer to season the sides of each patty with the seasoning powder instead- but I think you get a more even flavor doing it this way.

Step Two: Make Three Evenly Sized Beef Patties, then Sprinkle with Pepper on Both Sides

Using your hands, shape three round patties using the ground beef. You can choose what shape you want them to be to best suit your bread- as long as they are all roughly the same shape and size, so they cook evenly

Step Three: Cook the Patties, then Remove them From the Pan

Heat oil in a pan over a medium-high heat until cooked through. Place each burger patty in the pan- leaving a bit of space between each one. Flip after a few minutes to brown both sides.

Step Four: Butter One Side of Each Piece of Rye Bread

Butter one side of each rye bread slice. You want the bread buttered to get a better cook with a crispy golden-brown finish.

Step Five: Fry Half of the Bread Slices Buttered Side Down and Top with the Cheddar Cheese

Take three of the bread slices and put them in a heated pan. Place the cheddar cheese slices on top and continue to cook over medium heat. You want the cheese to be slightly melted before moving on to the next step.

Keep an eye on the bottom of the bread- so it doesn’t burn. If it is cooking too quickly, turn down the heat a little.

Step Six: Add Patties and Heat

Bring back the patties. Put them on top of the cheese in the center of the bread.

Heat the patties over medium-high heat, and continue to fry the bed for another 30 seconds- still keeping an eye on the bottom of the bread.

Step Seven: Spread the Secret Sauce on the Remaining Bread Slices (non-buttered side) and Add Them to the Stack

Grab a slice of bread (the un-fried ones) and slap on a good helping of your now-finished secret sauce. Put as much as you want.

Step Eight: Flip the Sandwich and Fry the Other Side

Take the sauce bread slice and complete your patty melt stack. Turn the whole thing upside down to cook the buttered side of the second side of the sandwich.

You ideally want both sides of the bread to be soft and golden brown but not burned.

Patty Melt Sauce

My not-so-secret patty melt sauce recipe takes any patty melt to the next level with a perfect blend of salt, sweetness, and a hit of tang.

Prep Time 5 minutes
Cook Time 10 minutes
Total Time 15 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1/4 c. mayonnaise
  • 2 tbsp. chopped bacon (unsmoked)
  • 3 tbsp. ketchup
  • 1 tsp. sugar
  • 1 tsp. green onion relish
  • A dash of apple cider vinegar

Instructions

  1. Heat butter or oil in a skillet and turn the heat up high. Cook the finely chopped bacon pieces until they are crispy. Remove them from the pan and put them to the side for now. Keep the juice from the pan.
  2. Combine the ketchup, mayo, onion relish and a dash of vinegar in a small bowl. If your relish uses large, sliced onions, cut them down a bit so they don't overpower the sauce. Mix well.
  3. Scoop a little of the bacon grease from the pan and stir in sugar. Add it to the bowl and mix it through.
  4. Stir in the bacon.
  5. When your burger patty melts are ready, slather on this sauce and enjoy!
