Have you already bought all the ingredients to make these white cheddar stuffed mushrooms? Now, you must look for the right equipment!

For this delicious recipe of white cheddar stuffed mushrooms, you need:

  • Cheese grater (yes, we have to grate the white cheddar cheese and the parmesan)
  • Whisk
  • Large bowl, preferably glass, over a pan/pot (if you have a double boiler, you can use it too)
  • Serving dish or plate
  • Small knife
  • Baking sheet

Choosing the Best Ingredients to Make Stuffed Mushrooms

As I mentioned, I want to help you prepare the most delicious and enjoyable Longhorn stuffed mushroom recipe.

Therefore, I’ll give you some tips to pick the best ingredients. Check them below!

Flour on table

Mushrooms

To prepare this recipe, you need button mushrooms, which are those small mushrooms you can find in almost all grocery stores or eateries. Actually, they’re the most common type of mushrooms in the US.

While they’re from the cremini mushroom family, button mushrooms are the youngest type! The Portobellos, for example, are larger and adults.

You may wonder why you should choose this variety. Well, white button mushrooms are very versatile, thanks to their flavor. That’s why they are used in multiple recipes around the world.

However, while I think the button variety is the best choice for stuffed mushrooms, you can also make this recipe with Portobello mushrooms if you want to take bigger bites while eating your appetizer!

Garlic Herb Cream Cheese

In this recipe, mushrooms are filled with a garlic herb cheese spread.

As you may imagine, this is one of the most important ingredients, as it gives a yummy flavor to this magnificent recipe. Therefore, you must choose a good version!

You can find a wide variety of cream cheese and cheesy spreads in your city’s grocery stores.

However, for Longhorn copycat recipes to make stuffed mushrooms, those with garlic and herb flavor are the best choices.

The garlic cream cheese or Herb Pub Cheese balances the flavors in the creamy cheese sauce for the stuffed mushrooms!

If you find several options in your local grocery store, just pick your favorite. Any quality brand will work well.

You can also make homemade garlic herb cream cheese at home. In this case, you should only combine some cream cheese with freshly grated garlic.

White Cheddar Cheese

In addition to cream cheese or Herb Pub Cheese for the filling, there’s another star ingredient to make the best white cheddar stuffed mushrooms recipe: the cheese itself.

Undoubtedly, this recipe is perfect for cheese lovers since it has three types of cheese, and each one brings different but delicious flavors to the final result.

The creamy filling has both white cheddar cheese and parmesan cheese.

Cheddar is one of the most popular types of cheese in the world and is often available in a wide variety of colors (from white to orange), textures (from sharp to creamy), and a range of flavors.

However, as it matures, cheddar’s texture becomes a bit dry and starts to crumble easily. Therefore, for this recipe, I’d recommend a milder cheddar cheese, preferably white.

There’s also the parmesan cheese – the one with that hard texture that we can grate on top of our favorite meals.

Many of us know this type of cheese because it’s common in many types of pasta dishes and soups.

We’re going to use grated parmesan because it adds a nutty, fruity, and salty flavor to the recipe!

Finally, we have to find a third type of cheese: provolone cheese. Unlike parmesan cheese, provolone has a semi-hard texture and a sweeter flavor.

As for color, provolone cheese can be white or yellow. Also, if you go to the grocery store, it’s usually available in packs of slices – yes, it’s an excellent sandwich filler, too – and smoked for a different flavor.

Bread Crumbs

This Longhorn stuffed mushroom recipe also has panko bread crumbs, which we can sprinkle over the top of this delicious dish and other appetizers to give them a lovely crispy touch.

Panko bread crumbs are widely used in Japanese dishes. Actually, they’re made with Japanese white bread.

I recommend using Japanese panko bread crumbs because they absorb less oil than other versions, giving our stuffed mushrooms a delicious, crunchy finish.

However, if you can’t find Japanese panko bread crumbs, don’t let that stop you! You can use common bread crumbs. Just choose the one you like the most!

Half and Half

Finally, there’s the confusing ingredient – the one you probably didn’t recognize when you read the list above.

“Half and half” is a mixture of two equal parts (you shouldn’t add a specific amount) of whole milk and cream.

Since it combines milk and cream, half and half can be high in fat. However, its fat content depends on the products you use.

Any “half and half” product available at your local grocery store can work well for this Longhorn stuffed mushroom recipe.

If you don’t want to buy this mix, you can also make it at home (yes, we have a homemade version for everything!). You just have to fill a measuring cup halfway with milk and then fill the other half with thick cream!

Can I Make White Cheddar Stuffed Mushrooms Ahead?

If you want to prepare before getting down to work and make this recipe, you can store your stuffed mushrooms in the refrigerator or freezer.

However, you should keep in mind that the white sauce used in this recipe contains dairy products, which are best eaten fresh.

  • 4 slices of provolone cheese

Cream Sauce

  • 1/2 c. shredded white cheddar cheese
  • 1 tbsp. flor
  • 1/2 c. shredded parmesan cheese
  • 1/4 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 c. half and half
  • 1/2 c. mayonnaise or sour cream
  • 1/2 tsp. black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp. dry mustard

Instructions

White Cheddar Sauce

1. We need a double boiler or a bowl over a pan full of boiling water. Once that is ready, add the flour, half and half, dry mustard powder, Worcestershire sauce, black pepper, and mayonnaise to the bowl or double boiler.

2. Whisk the sauce over the heat, making sure all the ingredients mix and melt smoothly without forming lumps.

3. Once the mixture looks melted and smooth, you can add the grated white cheddar cheese and grated parmesan. Again, you shouldn't stop mixing to prevent the sauce from starting to stick or burn.

4. If the ingredients are perfectly combined, we only have to take the white cheddar cheese sauce off the heat and put it into our serving dish.

White Cheddar Stuffed Mushrooms

1. Preheat the oven to 350 Fahrenheit degrees. Then, start removing the button mushrooms' stems. This process must be done carefully to avoid cutting the mushrooms too much (remember that we're going to fill them with the delicious white cheddar cheese filling). Therefore, you should use a small knife, such as the one you use to peel fruit.

2. Then, stuff the mushroom caps with the garlic cream cheese spread.

3. Next, stuff the mushrooms with delicious white cheddar sauce, combine the grated parmesan with the breadcrumbs. Cut the provolone cheese into slices and add them to this mixture, too.

4. Finally, you should gradually and carefully sprinkle this breadcrumbs and cheese mixture over your stuffed mushrooms!

5. Place the mushroom caps on a baking sheet. Here, it's essential to make sure there is enough space between each mushroom and don't overcrowd the baking sheet and tray we are using.

6. Then, bake the stuffed mushrooms for about 15 minutes or until the topping has a lovely golden brown color and is nice and crispy!
